I just (sort of) accepted my first “freelance” job today. I’m meeting the company tomorrow morning before studio. They want sketches and design ideas from me. I’m really nervous. I’ve never done anything like this before and I’m not sure what I should do, what I should say, what I should bring. Do I carry some markers with me and spit out some quick sketches? Do I print out previous work I’ve done for studio, both sketches and SolidWorks? I don’t think my work (sketches in particular) are even good enough to be presented at a company level.

How do I go about in documenting my hours for pay? Invoice? I’m so confused. What if they don’t like what I have to show and decide not to use me? How would I feel about that? Would that be a defining moment as a designer for me? And at the same time I’m thinking about what design means to me. This is a perfect way of figuring that out, fast. I’m not sure if I’m going to like my answer. What if I design something I hate?

The jitters are really starting to get to me now. I want to spend all night improving my abilities and refining my work. Should I print out what I’ve already done or bring in my computer? The insecurity is kicking in.

Someone give me more of that tea.
